Taking a Side Quest

Cube Dev: Taking a Side Quest

JOFD is still very much the priority.

Unfortunately, right now I'm working from the living room and the Cubes are sitting in the office.

And at this point, most of what I need to do with Just One Floor Deeper involves testing movement on the actual hardware.

So...

Side quest.

Secret Life of Aliens

I've officially started playing around with a Cube version of Secret Life of Aliens.

I'm not entirely sure how far this project will go yet.

I think the idea could be fun, but there's a pretty big difference between something sounding fun in my head and actually being fun once it's running on the Cube.

So for now, the goal is simple:

Build a working prototype and see where it leads.

We Have a UFO

There's already a little bit happening.

The regional map is displaying across the Cube, and our UFO is sitting there happily rotating away.

Which isn't exactly an alien invasion yet...

But it's a start.

Right now I'm working on twist movement and getting the UFO to actually travel across the map using the Cube itself.

Once that's working, I can start experimenting with what the actual game loop feels like.

Moving between regions. Finding things to investigate. Abducting humans and animals. Gathering information about Earth. Trying not to attract too much attention while preparing for the eventual invasion.

You know.

Normal alien-parent stuff.

Prototype First

I'm deliberately not getting too far ahead of myself with this one.

I have plenty of ideas for what SLOA could become, but first I need the basic movement and interaction running on the Cube.

Then I'll play it.

If it's fun, I'll keep going.

If it isn't, I'll change it.

And if the whole idea turns out not to work particularly well on the Cube...

Well, that's what prototypes are for.

For now, there's a map.

There's a UFO.

The UFO spins.

Next I'd really like it to go somewhere.

Considering how the last couple days of JOFD movement testing have gone, perhaps choosing movement as the first system for my relaxing little side project wasn't my smartest decision.
