The Final Boss Is... Movement

Cube Dev: The Final Boss Is... Movement

Well...

Just One Floor Deeper is mostly finished.

Except for one tiny, insignificant part of the game.

Movement.

You know, that thing you use to actually play it.

The Emulator Lied to Me

What I thought was finally working... wasn't.

Movement behaved well enough in the emulator that I thought we had it figured out. Then I put the build onto the actual Cube for the first time in a couple weeks and discovered that the real hardware had a slightly different opinion.

So we've been debugging, changing things, rewriting handlers, testing them, and then rewriting them again trying to get dungeon movement to behave exactly the way it should on the physical device.

I think the dungeon itself is finally there.

Of course, changing how all of that input is handled has had some side effects.

Apparently the Cube Doesn't Want to Leave

The latest victim is menu selection.

Twisting through the menus was working nicely, but after all the movement changes, selecting certain menu items has become somewhat traumatic for the Cube.

It seems particularly scared of the LEAVE option.

Maybe it's become attached to the dungeon.

Maybe it knows something I don't.

Either way, the input system still needs a little convincing.

Then... Testing?

If I can finally get movement and menu input nailed down on the actual hardware, the remaining list is getting very short.

I want to update some of the audio, do another round of cleanup and testing, and then get the game into the hands of a couple people who can actually play it and tell me what I've broken.

I'll also start figuring out exactly what it takes to turn the finished build into a .cub file and get it published.

So that's where we are.

Hundreds of maps. Combat. Skills. Equipment. Inventory. Status effects. Durability. Camps. Vendors. NPCs. Quests. Tombs. Sanctuary. Repairs. Upgrades. Relics. Shrines. Witches...

Mostly done.

And standing between all of that and the finish line?

Walking.

Of course it is.
